ABOUT THE VOLCANO

  Tajumulco Volcano

tajumulco volcano

This is the highest volcano in Central America, but the hike to the top, which begins at a high altitude, is relatively easy. We leave Quetzaltenango early in the morning and make our way by public bus to the town of San Marcos, near the Mexican border. After breakfast in the town of San Marcos we will board a second public bus to a place called Crucero Tajumulco. Approximately at 10:30 am, we will start our hike through corn fields and farm land. Lunch is taken after about 2 hours. At about 4 pm we reach an altitude of 4000 m and our camping spot. If the weather conditions are good, we will go to the summit (200 meters) to see the sunset. We start again at 5:00 am the next morning with ashort walk of 45 minutes further up. Sunrise will lighten the Cuchumatanes, from Tacana to Volcano Fuego. After breakfast, we will have another 3 hour walk down a small trail.
